POPULARITY OF WEBAPPS – YOUTUBE


YouTube created in February 2005 by three former PayPal emplyees ( Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim,) is a video sharing website on which users can upload and share videos. During all those years YouTube has grown like no other sites on the INTERNET (before facebook and twitter) It totally revolutionized the multimedia in the Internet. The original story behind creation of YouTube was that Chad Hurley and Steve Chen after they had experienced difficulty sharing videos that had been shot at a dinner party at Chen's apartment in San Francisco Though of an on line video sharing site.

YouTube offered the public a beta test of the site in May 2005, six months before the official launch in November 2005. The site grew rapidly, and in July 2006 the company announced that more than 65,000 new videos were being uploaded every day,and that the site was receiving 100 million video views per day. In 2009 YouTube was dominating provider of online video content in US with market share of over 43%.
It is also estimated that in 2007 YouTube consumed as much bandwidth as the entire Internet in 2000. In March 2008, YouTube's bandwidth costs were estimated at approximately US$1 million a day. Alexa ranks YouTube as the third most visited website on the Internet, behind Google, Facebook.

In 2006 Google acuired YouTube for US$1.65 Billion. And has the mayority of shares till now.
YouTube revolutionized the internet media sharing. You can watch trailers, funny pictures. YouTube video are used in TV news magazines. There was A YouTube orchestra first concert published online. YouTube is still evolving now putting HTML5 (flash free support) and HD resolution to their content. YouTube TV's access. This list keeps growing every few months.

    The best usage would be if every new movie (released and unreleased) would be available on youtube in hd (1080) for free without commercials break, so people instead of downloading this on torrent can watch it on youtube (few years ago I've found movie uploaded on YT in about 20 chunks;)

    YouTube is one of the sites that earned its reputation. You can see on the page everything you want, this is due to the lack of fees for uploaded files. The whole site is very user friendly, what is more there are not enormous amounts of ads and there are no limits in watching as well (like Megavideo). A simple interface allows even novice to easily benefit from the service. As was noted by a colleague above, the HD quality is also a great help to our hard drive:) This is a great advantage, but furthermore the high-resolution is allows to be customizes by ourselves in order to adjust to or internet speed and personal preferences.

    Megavideo is an interesting alternative to youtube, i see that there is a new 'black' video market growing on megavide. There are sites that you can watch newest full movies via megavideo.

    I agree with Andrzej. Watching ads-free online movies in hd would be a great thing. About Megavideo, I don't know how is it now, but about a year ago when I wanted to watch movie after approximately 70 minutes the screen informing that if I want to watch videos longer than 70 minutes I must buy premium account or wait more than an hour. But the worst part is that after waiting you could watch this movie ONLY from the beggining. That's why I'm not visiting this site anymore.

    The best usage? I think there is one and the best usage-pattern. I mean "embedding" video. This is the source of the youtube success, the ability to embedd video easily and painfully in your site/social application etc.

    And I must say I like to "vevo" concept and implementation. This is truly a pleasure to watch video in HD quality streamed from the network. I personally don't have any tv-set, so this is my only opportunity to watch music videos.
