ADVERTISING - PART I





Advertising is all around us. Hardly could one imagine his/her life without being bombarded with numerous ads trying to persuade us to purchase different articles that we usually don’t need. Many methods of advertising goods and services exist and contemporary market seeks the best ones to pocket best profits. According to marketing definitions, advertising is a paid promotion of goods, services, companies and ideas. It could be concluded that such a promotional strategy is aimed to make us familiar with options, attributes of products. Nonetheless, we are all quite aware of the fact that numerous tricks, psychological means are used manipulate us into buying this instead of that. Still, as I found out in many conversations, people believe they are not susceptible, claiming such tricks do affect other people, but not them. I bet most of you would say with confidence, that they are more or less in control of what is their purchase choice. However, you might be mistaken, or let’s say a little overconfident. Advertising industry exercises different methods and I encourage you to become familiar with them and therefore more in control of your choices. I will present you with some common tricks: so called “supermarket psychology” , then discuss some psychological basics and at last investigate “ you are what you buy” tactic.

Packaging is obviously an advertising tool to differentiate one product from another, but did you know that it may convey much more. Usage of shapes, colours, fonts or images may communicate to you that this products represents some certain values. They are displayed so you can attribute it to yourself. Utilizing green will immediately make a product more healthy and the brand more environmental friendly. If you care, you are probably more prone to buy such a brand instead of a more mainstream looking one- and you do it without much thought! Images of half-naked women advertise goods from beauty products to food, cars, vacation and beer. But nudity sells everything, so why not? Were you aware that when a merchandiser wants to communicate a drop in prices he will do it different way depending on the price of the good? With cheaper things, let’s take a chocolate bar, the reduction in the price will be announced in percentage ( Snickers, now 20% cheaper!). It makes a bigger impact than saying that it is 25 grosz cheaper. With cars instead they always communicate the reduction in exact amount of money( Out now, discount for previous year Hondas is 5,400 Pln). Sounds better that 3% discount, doesn’t it. And I don’t intend to say that customers can’t count but such a trick is enough to catch your attention and consider a purchase. Such methods are countless, for different sectors distinguish.     Thats tricky one, right? I can't say that I consider deeply my every purchase. I think most of my purchases are not spontaneous, but sometimes ... .

  3. About the art of advertising, we could write a book or lead hours of lectures. Practically at every step we encounter a lot kinds of tricks, which have to persuade us to buy a product. While being in a supermarket I saw many times tricks such as: Hot Deal for the product, that remained at the same price. This definitely works on the psyche of the consumers.

  4. Well your second question in my case is an answer for the first one :)

    It really depends what I'm buying, for example when I buy computer hardware I spend a lot of time for viewing benchmarks, technical details etc.

    But for other things I usually don't bother that much, if it it fits it purpose then it's fine :).

  5. I try not to buy things that aren’t useful for me. I rather buy only things that I earlier planned to buy, especially when it comes to something more expensive.

  7. there is one case when the advertising really affects my choices that i am aware of - it is the BAD advertising.
    there are some kinds of products that are associated with some particular lifestyle or a personality type by a specific advertising campaigns. examples are coca-cola zero, iphone or porsche cars.
    i'd love to have a smartphone, but i would never choose the iphone over i.e. some HTC. why?

    this is the way people see iphone users.. and it's all because of specific advertising (apple wanted it that way).

  8. When I'm sure that I really like something and that I need it I don't think much, but I’m not totally spontaneous customer. But probably it is merit of advertising that I think I need something. I think that a lot of people believe they're resistant from advertisements but they're not. Someone will see
    something on TV e.g. clothes and runs to buy them. Another person sees the same thing on TV and doesn't like it. But then the cloth is noticed on a human who already bought one and it looks better than on TV. And this is another kind of advertisement when we see something live.

  9. Answer is very simple.
    If i go to store (for example Tesco or even Media Markt) and I would see a new laptop or TV or smartphone (let's say Htc HD2) for 20-29zł i would buy it spontaneous without thinking twice.

    But if I see IPhone for only 1399zł with 4 year contract (for only 300zł) i can only laugh

  10. Obviously it depends on the scale of price. If it's reasonably small I think we are most prone for such psycholigical tricks and in that case a good ad can switch you from CocaCola to Pepsi.

    In case of more expensive purchases I am definitely a thinking customer.

  11. Marek if right. On everyday purchases, such as grocery shopping people are prone for psychological tricks. But expensive purchases are always preceded by deep thoughts.

  12. I like to experiment so from time to time I bought some rubbish ;]. But with bigger price I trying to make purchases more careful.

  13. If I want to buy expensive product I plan expenses before. Such planning contains comparision of products, it price and quality. I also search for reliable sources of information about product I want to buy. But when I want to buy cheap daily necessities I don't spend time on thinking because I have moreless my own opinion about particular prodoucts.

  14. I agree with you guys. Am I a spontaneous customers? It depends on what I'm buying. When I go to a grocery shop - yes I am - a can buy a something to eat spontaneously but when I buy for example some electronics I'll at least read some reviews first.
    I think that women are more spontaneous customers, especially when buying clothes ;)

  16. My shopping attitude varies depending on things I am buying. I am a spontaneous shopper when I buy food. I love to buy something good for the evening. (that’s probably because I like to cook) I am careful cloths buyer, generally I don’t enjoy spending several hours in malls trying to find something suitable. I am trying to minimize time spend in shops. Different story is with bike parts. In a bike shop I catch myself on buying stuff to cheer me up. ;o)

  17. In general, I consider myself a spontaneous buyer. Every time when I go to a grocery store having nothing to buy, I find myself leaving with bags full of unnecessary stuff. On the other hand, when the month is coming to an end, and the amount of money in my pocket is less than satisfying, I tend to think: do I really need to buy that much? And I carefully consider every possible product.

  18. I used to be spontaneous customer. Now it has changed. I change my way of shopping to internet shopping. It takes less time and I don't need to spend whole day to buy few things. I think that more and more people will choose internet shopping these days.

  19. I don't think of myself as a spontaneous customer, but sometimes I do spontaneous shopping, especially when it comes to electronics, i know that i could buy something cheaper on the internet, but many times i cant wait and i buy without thinking.

  20. I don't like ads that are too pushy. I hate popups on Wirtualna Polska, Onet, etc.. I can agree to watch the ad before CNN news video service, but when I see a popup I focus my sight out of the POPUP area, so not to notice the brand that is trying to "sell" me something.

    And yes, I think a lot about what to buy, how, and where. But I think twice. Nowadays we have all kinds of www services offering comparition of prices in stores/online stores. But I am afraid the advertisment have a great deal of influence on me either way. Sometimes I see an advert which is astonishing, high-quality footage or photography, then I just fall in love with the product and just have to buy it.
